Benzie County is home to Interlochen Arts Academy, the Manistee and Platte rivers, the port cities of Frankfort and Arcadia, the nationally known Crystal Downs golf course, and large parts of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
Interlochen Center for The Arts provides world-class art and educational experiences for the young and old on its campus fifteen miles east of Beulah. Interlochen Camp, founded in 1928, was the first performing arts camp of its kind for youth grades 3 through 12. There’s a summer camp for youth, high school, college for the performing arts, and continuing education experiences. Offerings include:
- Creative writing

- Music
- Motion picture arts
- Theater Arts
- Visual Arts
Performances by world-class artists and musicians open to the public are scheduled regularly throughout the summer.
The Lakeshore was created after the National Park Service studied the country to find “remaining areas of national significance.” That study found these dunes and the scenery that surrounds them deserving of national recognition.
At the north end of the lake, a mile-long road off M-22 leads to the Point Betsie lighthouse, which was built in 1858. The light is 52 feet above the lake and it is visible to ships 30 miles away. Watching a sunset over the lake from the Point Betsie life station is a great tradition to include in your vacation plans, complete with a campfire, smores, and roasting marshmallows.
Crystal Lake is an easy 270 miles from Detroit and about 300 miles from Chicago. Many week-enders use the Traverse City airport which is only about 30 miles to the east.
