Learn About Elk Lake Real Estate
Elk Lake is deep, clear and beautiful. Caribbean blue, it’s a mile and a half wide and nine miles long.
Shaped like the much larger Torch Lake just to the northeast, Elk is nearly 200’ deep over most of its length. It's an especially fine fishing lake for lake trout, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, muskellunge, whitefish, and brown, rainbow, and lake trout. Cruise in your classic Chris-Craft right up to the marina or nearby restaurants and shops in the Village of Elk Rapids.
It may surprise you to learn that Elk Lake is the third largest inland lake in Michigan, with the nearby Traverse Bay and Torch Lake often being the first waterfront real estate that buyers think of. But the large and deep Elk Lake offers such a unique landscape and famously high water quality that it definitely should not be overlooked!
Like most of the lakes in this area it was carved into the sand and gravel of northern Michigan by great glaciers advancing down from the Arctic north. Elk were native in Michigan and the lake; the town and the river were all named after a pair of elk antlers found in the rapids of the Elk River.
