Learn About Lake Leelanau Real Estate
Lake Leelanau is two lakes in one, each with a very different history.
North Lake Leelanau is glacial, deep, and pure. Some of the finest cherry orchards in the world lie above it to the east. The Village of Leland and its historic fishing village is just to the west on Lake Michigan’s shore.
South Lake Leelanau was created when a dam was built in Leland's Fishtown district. This raised the water level 15 feet and flooded a long valley. South Lake Leelanau is an excellent fishing lake, well stocked with all of the fish for which Michigan is famous. The South Basin of the lake is known as a wonderful brown trout and walleye fishery.
Lake Leelanau History
Lake Leelanau real estate has an interesting history. In 1860 a French fur trader purchased land on the east shore of what is now South Lake Leelanau. Though his goal was to strike oil, he instead struck a geyser of sparkling artesian water.
Sadly disappointed in his luck, he sold the property, but this spring still gushes today at nearby Fountain Point resort and has since been put on the National Register of Historic Places.
